경복궁 Gyeongbokgung Palace

The palace entrance

The Gyeongbokung Palace is the most famous palace in Seoul. Completed in the year 1395, it served as the palace for the Joseon Dynasty until the late 1500's when it was destroyed by Japanese invaders. Restoration of the palace was started in 1865, however, a few years later many buildings were destroyed in a fire. Over the years since, different parts of the palace have been restored and rebuilt.
